Advanced Hepatology and Transplant Fellowship:

This fellowship for a one-year ACGME-accredited Advanced Hepatology and Transplant Fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital is open to individuals who will have completed accredited 3-year Pediatric Gastroenterology fellowships. Training in this program is comprehensive and will include supervision in the management of ambulatory and in-patient care to children and young adults with a broad range of congenital and acquired hepatobiliary disorders. There will be opportunities to assist in the education and supervision of GI fellows. In addition, all fellows spend approximately 40% of their time participating in a mentored clinical research project. Funding is available to support attendance at regional and national meetings. Fellows will have opportunities for peer education through participation in a curriculum of lectures and conferences offered both at Children’s Hospital as well as the adjacent campuses of Harvard Medical School and its affiliate hospitals. A one-month rotation at a local adult Hepatology/Liver Transplant program is included.

Boston Children’s Hospital is the major pediatric teaching facility for Harvard Medical School. Under the direction of Christopher Duggan, MD, MPH, this fellowship will combine clinical and research teaching through a combined effort of Boston Children’s, Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. Clinical training will be accomplished through a combination of clinical rotations including in- and outpatient sessions, procedural training, and regularly scheduled conferences. Fellows will also participate in a mentored clinical research project. Fellows will have opportunities for peer education through participation in a curriculum of lectures and conferences offered both at Children’s Hospital as well as the adjacent campuses of Harvard Medical School and its affiliate hospitals.

The goal of this fellowship is to train successful clinicians and clinical investigators to become academic leaders in the treatment and study of children and adolescents with GI Motility and Functional Disorders. This program will be 1 year and will include development of clinical expertise and clinical research projects at the conclusion of the 1-year fellowship program.

The fellow will meet with the research mentor(s) frequently to discuss progress, resources and support needed. A Scholarship Oversight Committee will be charged with assessing twice annually the research progress of the fellow, but can be scheduled more frequently if necessary at the discretion of the chair.

The fellow will spend at least 3 half day per week attending GI Motility clinics with an emphasis on experience with difficult diagnostic and management challenges and second opinions under the guidance of a senior faculty member. The fellow will also evaluate and follow hospitalized patients with GI Motility disorders and will perform GI Motility procedures under the supervision of a senior faculty member. The fellow will also attend the didactic program of the GI Motility Center at the Boston Children’s Hospital on Wednesday afternoons. The fellow will also be expected to teach medical students, residents, and other fellows.

Advanced Fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

The fellow will spend time on the adult IBD service at the BWH interacting with senior IBD attendings responsible for the inpatient care of adults with IBD. The fellow will also attend the didactic program of the IBD Centers at the Boston Children’s Hospital and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The fellow will also be expected to teach medical students, residents, and other fellows. The fellow will be evaluated bi-annually by the co-Program Directors of the IBD Fellowship (summative and bi-annual evals). Additionally, the fellow be evaluated by each attending who supervises them in the IBD clinical setting. This will yield 5 evaluations per quarter, resulting in 20 evaluations each year.
