Motility and Functional Disorders |Overview
Boston Children’s Hospital Advanced Fellowship in Gastrointestinal Motility and Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders:
Under the direction of Samuel Nurko, MD, MPH and Leonel Rodriguez, MD, MS, this fellowship will combine clinical and research. The goal of this fellowship is to train successful clinicians and clinical investigators to become academic leaders in the treatment and study of children and adolescents with GI Motility and Functional Disorders. This program will be 1 year and will include development of clinical expertise and clinical research projects at the conclusion of the 1-year fellowship program.
One fellow per year will be accepted for participation in this program, and salary support will be provided at the level of a 4th year fellow (PGY7). The fellow will dedicate 20% of time to a research project. The fellow will meet with the research mentor(s) frequently to discuss progress, resources and support needed. A Scholarship Oversight Committee will be charged with assessing twice annually the research progress of the fellow, but can be scheduled more frequently if necessary at the discretion of the chair.
The fellow will spend at least 3 half day per week attending GI Motility clinics with an emphasis on experience with difficult diagnostic and management challenges and second opinions under the guidance of a senior faculty member. The fellow will also evaluate and follow hospitalized patients with GI Motility disorders and will perform GI Motility procedures under the supervision of a senior faculty member. The fellow will also attend the didactic program of the GI Motility Center at the Boston Children’s Hospital on Wednesday afternoons. The fellow will also be expected to teach medical students, residents, and other fellows.
Boston Children’s Hospital is the major pediatric teaching facility for Harvard Medical School. The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition includes more than 50 faculty members and a full panel of GI subspecialty programs.
