Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit |Overview

The Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU) cares for critically ill children, from newborns to college-age youth. We provide critical care services after major surgery and for all virtually all hospital programs and all childhood conditions, with the exception of severely burned patients and children with cardiac disease.

Our goal is to provide your child and family with highly skilled and personalized care, in partnership with you.

Our expertise in pediatric intensive care

The Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU) at Boston Children's is one of the highest-volume pediatric intensive care units in the United States. We have 30 state-of-the-art pediatric beds and care for more than 2,000 critically ill children annually.

Our MSICU serves as one of the largest extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) centers in the U.S., treating about 60 children annually. We also house the first hospital-based simulator suite in a Boston teaching hospital, enhancing our clinicians’ training and preparedness for medical emergencies.
