For Health Care Professionals |Overview

Most new patients are referred to the Maternal Fetal Care Center (MFCC) when routine tests have indicated a problem with their unborn fetus. Our experience in fetal care has shown that the earlier an anomaly can be correctly diagnosed, the greater a baby's chances of experiencing optimal development and health. That's why we recommend referring patients to us for detailed imaging and other tests as soon as you suspect a problem.

Some findings will require immediate interventions after birth and for those families; we will recommend delivery in the Longwood Medical Area at either Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center or Brigham and Women's Hospital. Other findings will not be emergent in the neonatal period. Those families will be referred back to you for pregnancy management and delivery and may not return to Boston Children's Hospital until several months after delivery. The MFCC staff will facilitate any follow-up appointments and further coordination that needs to occur. We work with you to ensure seamless care for patients in a time-sensitive manner.

To refer a patient, please fax over pertinent medical records, demographics, and insurance information to the Maternal Fetal Care Center at 617-730-0124 or they can be emailed toMFCCReferrals@childrens.harvard.edu. A new patient referral form should be completed each time you refer a patient and used as the cover sheet for this fax. Incomplete information may cause a delay in contact the patient and getting her scheduled for appointments in our center. Please call us at 617-355-6512 if you have any additional questions or concerns.
