Luis Riquelme |Professional History
Luis F. Riquelme, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, BCS-S is an Associate Professor at New York Medical College. He is also Director, Center for Swallowing and Speech-Language Pathology, New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn. He specializes in working with adults and is a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing & Swallowing Disorders. He completed his M.S. at Columbia University and his Ph.D. at The Graduate Center, CUNY. He teaches courses in dysphagia, management of medical patients, professional issues and ethics, and co-teaches modules in diagnostic methods. He also developed and teaches the diagnostic practicum rotation at New York Methodist Hospital. He has authored articles on swallowing disorders (dysphagia), multiculturalism, cultural competence, leadership and quality improvement. He has presented locally and nationally, and has been on several local and national boards and committees. At present, he is Chair of the American Board on Swallowing & Swallowing Disorders; Chair of the NY State Board for Speech Language Pathology and Audiology. He is Past Chair of the ASHA Multicultural Issues Board and Past President of the New York State Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Dr. Riquelme is also a co-founder of the Hispanic Caucus for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (1992). He became an American Speech-Language Hearing (ASHA) Fellow in 2009 and in 2006 he received ASHA’s Certificate of Recognition for Special Contributions in Multicultural Affairs. In 2001 he received NYSSLHA’s Distinguished Service Award.
