Alan B. Retik |Professional History

Dr. Alan B. Retik passed away on February 24, 2022. As Boston Children’s emeritus urologist-in-chief and professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Retik not only pioneered the field of pediatric urology, but founded the first Department of Urology here at Boston Children’s.

Dr. Retik’s service to Boston Children’s, our families, and our fellow clinicians spanned six decades, from his arrival in 1977 to his continued research into the development, application, and evaluation of new technologies and techniques in pediatric urologic surgery. During that time, he also served as surgeon-in-chief from 2002 to 2008. Following his retirement as urologist-in-chief in 2012, Dr. Retik continued in his roles as a researcher, senior associate in urology, and executive director of our International Health Services program, creating new opportunities to provide specialized care to children beyond our U.S. borders.

The Department of Urology is committed to continuing Dr. Retik’s legacy of exceptional patient care and clinician training.
