What we do

Critical Care Medicine’s primary clinical activities occur in the Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU). The MSICU is one of the highest volume pediatric intensive care units in the United States, with 30 beds and more than 2,000 admissions annually. The MSICU provides care for infants and children with all types of medical and surgical conditions, including all Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) support for every condition except congenital heart disease, with specific expertise in the care of patients with neurologic and oncologic diseases (including stem cell transplant recipients). Critical Care Medicine has a unique collaboration with the Department of Surgery: a combined Surgical-Critical Care Program that fuses our two programs across all clinical and educational domains within the critical care program. This includes three surgeons, trained in critical care, providing coverage in the MSICU over 26 weeks of the year....Other hospital programs that are led by members of the Division's critical care faculty include the Neurocritical Care Program (under the direction of Dr. Robert C. Tasker); Resuscitation Program; Respiratory Care & ECMO Program; Critical Care Transport Program; CAPE (Home Ventilation) Program; and the Critical Care Nutrition Program.

Dr. Monica Kleinman, Medical Director of the MSICU. She is also the chair of the American Heart Association's Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee, as well as past chair of the Pediatric Subcommittee. She previously served as co-chair of the Pediatric Task Force for the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) and will be the co-chair for the 2015 Conference for Consensus on Science and Treatment Recommendations.

重症监护医学的部门research portfoliospans basic, clinical, translational, and education research in diverse areas of biomedical science and pediatrics. In 2016, faculty in the Division of Critical Care Medicine held 3 NIH R01 awards and numerous foundation grants, and the Division’s junior faculty held approximately one-third of all of the NIH K12 Pediatric Critical Care and Trauma Scientist Development Program Awards in the county.

In 2018, faculty in the Division of Critical Care Medicine hold six NIH R01 awards and numerous foundation grants, and the Division's junior faculty hold 2 NIH K12 Pediatric Critical Care and Trauma Scientist Development Program Awards and 1 K23 Award. The division's basic science efforts includes the Kohane Lab for Biomaterials and Drug Delivery and the Randolph Lab for Influenza Virus-Related Complications in Children.

The Division of Critical Care Medicine is on the forefront of the delivery and research of medical education, specifically the domains of clinical training, medical simulation and online learning.Dr.
