Sleep Program |Overview

What is a Sleep Center?

Here at Boston Children Health Physicians (BCHP), we have a superb multidisciplinary team well suited to evaluate, diagnose, and manage sleep disorders for children, adolescents, and adults. Our team is comprised of board-certified Sleep Medicine Physicians, Pulmonologists, Allergists, and affiliated Otolaryngologists (ENT). As experts in their fields, our physicians are dedicated to using cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic technology to provide the best possible outcome for every one of our patients. In addition, we have a wonderful support staff including respiratory therapists, social workers and dieticians.

Conditions We Treat in Adults and Children

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome
  • Central Sleep Apnea
  • Hypoventilation disorders
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Insomnias - difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Narcolepsy
  • Sleep Terrors
  • Sleep Walking
  • Sleep disorders associated with ADHD, autism, and other neurodevelopmental disorders
  • Restless Leg Syndrome

Diagnostic Evaluation

Depending on the concern and the differential diagnosis, different studies may be used to diagnose the issue. These may include:

  • Diagnostic overnight polysomnogram (sleep study)
  • CPAP and BPAP initiation and titration
  • Multiple Sleep Latency Test
  • Assessment of oxygenation and ventilation for patients with tracheotomies and /or using home ventilators

Why choose our center?

Our Sleep Program in BCHP not only has expert physicians to evaluate and treat adults and children, but in addition we have several out-reach offices throughout the Hudson Valley. Knowing that sleep issues may require complex care and require routine follow up, we make it easier where our specialists come to you. We also offer telehealth visits in addition to in-person visits, limiting exposure to viral illnesses and offering convenient care on your schedule.

What is a sleep study?

This overnight test is noninvasive and painless, for adults and children, with parents or guardians staying with their children. During the study, a technician monitors the patient while a computerized system digitally records a number of physiological parameters. This recording will give information about sleep stages, the presence of respiratory events, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, and number of leg movements. Depending on insurance coverage, a home sleep study may be done alternatively in adults.

Where are these tests performed?

After each patient is seen in the office or by Telehealth, you and your physician will discuss which sleep laboratory is best suited to address each patient’s needs. Our division is affiliated with several major hospitals in the region and will work with each patient to determine the optimal sleep lab or home sleep study for adults.
